Synopsis
Born on the 4th of July and abandoned at a young age by her drug-addicted mother, freedom is at the core of 18-year-old Melodee’s identity – or so she thinks. But when she robs the grandmother who raised her and leaves home to start a new life, her sense of abandonment follows her, and freedom proves to be more and more elusive as life, relationships, and her own integrity turn out to be more complicated than she thought. As her grandmother’s faith is tested and her sister’s capable exterior erodes, the question arises whether any of them will be able to escape the cycle of brokenness and the wounds of their past.
Characters
- MELODEE (F), 18 — Naïve, arrogant, full of life, rebellious. Needs wide, strong vocal range. (Ab3–G5 required; G3–C#6 for optional notes; must be able to hold a harmony alone.)
- HARMONI (F), 19-20 —Melodee’s sister: smart, no-nonsense, and pathologically capable. Needs wide, strong vocal range. (A3–E5; must be able to hold a harmony alone.)
- PATRICIA (F), 50s-60s — Their grandmother: sensible, compassionate, funny. Strong alto range (G3–C#5; must be able to hold a harmony alone.)
- JAY (M), 20s — Smart, slick, charming . . . and charms Melodee easily. Strong rock baritone (A2—F4).
- GREG (M), 40s — A truth-telling antagonist, witty and merciless. Strong rock baritone (A2—F4).
- ENSEMBLE — Counterpoint, solos, and multiple characters: the ensemble will not be bored in this show!
